Birdie Theatre Company is a
theatre education network for
young people aged 15+ in China.
Birdie was established in 2021 by a collective of internationally-trained theatre practitioners. Growing rapidly, we now have a cohort of 60+ mentors/facilitators running various educational projects for 500+ young people (aged 15-30) across China.
Alternative to existing conservatoire trainings in China, we put a great emphasis on collaborative creation, contemporary theatre- and performance-making, new writing and dramaturgy, interdisciplinary research skills, cross-cultural awareness, and up-to-date AdTE practices.
Birdie is an active player in TYP education in China. Every October, we collaborate with Shanghai YOUNG Theater to present「POKE破壳」birdie TYP Season. It is the first and largest TYP festival in China, showcasing young creative voices in China and beyond. We are actively connecting with more institutes and individuals to make TYP better together.
Courses & Workshops
We provide non-formal learning opportunities in the form of online courses, workshops and camps.
Productions
We make ambitious theatre works
with, for and by young people.
Interdisciplinary Lab
We design and facilitate Project-Based Learning (PBL) integrating social issues, critical research skills and artistic creations.
Apprenticeship Program
- We train and mentor prospective backstage practitioners jointly with carefully selected industry partners.
24-Hour Challenge
We host and open call themed 24-Hour Challenge to promote local audience engagement and accessibility, in collaboration with theatres, schools and communities.
At Birdie, we work with teenagers, uni students as well as mature working individuals who share a passion for performing arts, despite of their drastically different walks of life.

Joanna
Aged 17,
Currently studying BA Theatre
at Swarthmore College
“Living in Xiamen City, I had very little access to theatre. I tried to study acting for China's national art college entrance exam and was heavily judged. Birdie's summer camp was very refreshing. It gave me a taste of different approaches to actor training and ways of making theatre. Adapting Brecht's Children and Mother Courage with the cohort reminded me of my own family trauma and how mob hysteria similarly manifests in wars today and in history. I am more determined that theatre is exactly what I want to do."

Chelsey
Aged 19,
Currently studying BA Theater
at Sarah Lawrence College
"In retrospect, I had no idea what theatre practice means. Learning from a professional production process allowed me to reposition myself and opened me up to new interests in dramaturgy and technical arts. It also raised an important research question for me: whether and to what extent actors are tools of director's vision, which was later realized as an EPQ essay in my school course. I recomend Birdie to anyone who wants to pursue theatre seriously."

Yuki
Aged 22, Previously a musician
Currently studying Advanced Theatre Practice
at RCSSD (UK)
"Transitioning from music to performance, Birdie's summer camp was a milestone for me. I was able to create my first work in a very open, supportive and professional environment, experimenting with and integrating visual, music, dance and interactive games. While realizing my vision was cool, the most important lesson I learnt was on how to be a collaborator-- don't put myself first, put trust in your collaborators and the process."

Li
Aged 30, Previously a Trading Lawyer
Currently studying ATP at RCSSD
"I didn't expect that a 4-week summer camp would allow me to find my way of expression, in the process of which I was able to gain a deeper understanding of myself. I hope this is an encouraging message to those like me: theatre is an inclusive space, despite of your age or background. Find your joy and explore freely. Birdie's camp is exactly the place for that."
